What is Boots from Pros?

Boots from Pros: BFP is a unique opportunity for poet-athletes to receive new or lightly worn cleats from professional soccer players on the Washington Spirit and other NWSL teams. Boots From Pros was started in 2020 by Washington Spirit and U.S. Women’s National Team player (and DC SCORES board member!) Ashley Hatch. 

The goal is to not only provide our poet-athletes with high-quality equipment but also to create a special bond within the soccer community among youth players and their local professional players. Each pair of shoes will include a note of advice or encouragement from the professional player who gifted them. We also have opportunities for our poet-athletes to connect with the pros at our events and Washington Spirit games at Audi Field. Occasionally, Washington Spirit players may be able to visit our schools and present the cleats themselves!

How to nominate a poet-athlete

Requests are open to all poet-athletes! However, to continue to empower girls and gender-expansive youth in our sport, we have set a requirement to balance requests. This is reflected in the request form. 

Nominated poet-athletes are required to meet all of the following criteria:

  • Demonstrate outstanding teamwork, leadership, and commitment to DC SCORES programming in soccer and/or writing. Poet-athlete demonstrate DC SCORES values.
  • Poet-athletes must fit the following shoe sizes: women’s 5.5 to 13.5 = kid’s/men’s 4 to 12. (Cleats are gifted from adult pro players so we are limited to these sizes.)

Nominated poet-athletes must also meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Physical need. They are in need of a new pair of cleats.
  • Social/emotional need. They are experiencing challenges at school, at home, or elsewhere and this recognition would be uplifting and an important way to keep them engaged with DC SCORES.
  • Talent. They show a strong interest in soccer and demonstrate exceptional skill and commitment to becoming a better soccer player.
