Program
Our Words Our City is DC SCORES' premier youth poetry showcase and annual Poet-Athlete Award ceremony.
The May 20 event at Woolly Mammoth Theatre will feature original spoken-word performances from DC SCORES poet-athletes participating in the Youth WORD Initiative, an enhanced writing program for students passionate about poetry and performance. Poet-athletes will be joined on stage by star spoken word poet, including our feature performer, Rudy Francisco, who is the 2009 National Underground Poetry Slam champion and 2010 Individual World Poetry Slam champion.
The evening's program also includes the presentation of the Poet-Athlete Award to Tori Huster, in recognition of her leadership of the NWSL Players Association and her contributions to DC SCORES as a Washington Spirit player. Learn more about Huster, and the Poet-Athlete Award, below!
Our Words Our City will begin at 6pm with a pre-event reception. The reception is first come first served, so arrive early to enjoy drinks and hors d'oeuvres and mingle with members of D.C.'s poetry and soccer communities!

2025 Poet-Athlete Award Winner
Tori Huster
DC SCORES is honored to present the 2025 Poet-Athlete Award to Tori Huster for her leadership at the National Women's Soccer League Players Association (NWSLPA) and her contributions to DC SCORES as a Washington Spirit player.
The Poet-Athlete Award is bestowed upon individuals who embody the ethos of DC SCORES poet-athletes by using their voices to serve as leaders in their communities and speak up against injustice. As president of the NWSLPA, Huster played a pivotal role in negotiating the union's historic collective bargaining agreement (CBA) in 2022 and the subsequent landmark 2024 CBA, which secured free agency rights and abolished the draft — making the NWSL the first major American professional sport to achieve these groundbreaking milestones.
As deputy executive director of the NWSLPA, Huster continues to champion players’ rights, equitable treatment, and enhanced working conditions, with a particular emphasis on player health, wellness, and safety. In addition to her work in labor rights, Huster has been a visible advocate for DC SCORES. As the most-tenured player in Washington Spirit history, with over 150 appearances, she was a steadfast supporter of the nonprofit’s mission. Through the Spirit’s Official Community Partnership with DC SCORES, she actively championed its programming, which serves more than 3,500 youth through soccer, poetry, and service learning.

Feature Poet
Rudy Francisco
Rudy Francisco is one of the most recognizable names in spoken word poetry and will perform as the feature poet at Our Words Our City. As an artist, Rudy Francisco combines social critique, introspection, honesty, and humor. He uses personal narratives to discuss the politics of race, class, gender, and religion while simultaneously pinpointing and reinforcing the interconnected nature of human existence.
Rudy Francisco seeks to create work that promotes healthy dialogue, discourse, and social change. Furthermore, Rudy has made conscious efforts to cultivate young poets and expose the youth to the genre of spoken word poetry via coaching, workshops, and performances. He has conducted guest lectures and performances at countless colleges and universities across the nation.
Francisco has shared stages with prominent artists such as Gladys Knight, Jordin Sparks, Musiq Soul Child, and Jill Scott. He is also the co-host of the largest poetry venue in San Diego, competes in domestic and international poetry slam competitions, and was nominated for an NAACP Image Award. Ultimately, Rudy's goal is to continue to assist others in harnessing their creativity while cultivating his own. Rudy Francisco is the 2009 National Underground Poetry Slam champion, 2010 Individual World Poetry Slam champion and appeared on TV One’s “Verses and Flow”
